こういうUpsetは嬉しいですね…。NHL1回戦が昨日終了し、16チームが8チームに絞られました。Upsetになったのは、モントリオール（v.ボストン）とカルガリー（v.ヴァンクーバー）。どちらも７戦までもつれました。
Calgaryはマイナーマーケットで、ここ数年はプレーオフ（地区15チーム中8チーム）進出のボーダーラインチームです。なにせカナダのチームはトロントを除き、予算がすくなく、ビッグネームになると他のチームにトレードないしFAで送り出さざるを得なくなる、という常があります。Flamesはカナダでしかもマイナーマーケットという問題を抱えたチームです。
それでも80年代までは、選手の年俸も日本円で億という選手は少なかったのですが、MLB同様給与もインフレ気味で、数倍に上昇しています。Vancouverはここのところ、予算に余裕があり、選手を集めていましたので、少し状況は異なります。

"It’s a huge sense of pride, In this day in sports, you hear it’s all (about) money. But I’ll tell you, when they showed on the TV in the change room the street in Calgary where the fans are celebrating and waving flags, the boys in here gave a pretty big cheer. This is a very proud group of guys — proud to make those fans and the city happy to be hockey fans. We feel in debt to the city for putting up with the losing seasons. We feel we owe ourselves and them success."
